spring theory alumni sage caswell returns to the san francisco-based label to deliver his debut album hoop earring. it s an enigmatic record that comes from the producer s own movement through personal transformation. it follows 2015’s sleep quarters , caswell s introspective label debut, and offers 10 tracks spread out across two 12-s. hoop earring is heavily informed by surrealist visions and archetypal images from caswell’s past that have crystallized within the context of this longplay album. hoop earring successfully paints images with broad brushstrokes and allegorical song titles that allows one to fill in fine details of a landscape built within the framework ten songs. “ray of light 95’” alludes to a moment in time that smartly places you alongside an adolescent caswell while songs like “here we guard upon the soul” land locks squarely in the middle with a poignant, nail-on-the-head statement. -zora scales (step 1)- provides a focal reference to the fantasy world that this album might be the soundtrack to.

last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

italian duos nice7 & dirty channels join forces for the first time to deliver the acid induced feelings ep on crosstown rebels. the release features two exceptional originals with torontos nathan barato bringing his signature heavy sounds into play for the remix. nicola daniele and cesare marocco aka nice7 are amongst the latest italian stars to emerge in dance music. since 2005, the year in which the two of them paired up, they have released on labels like noir music, get physical, remote area, suara, defected and gruuv. dirty channels are simone & leme, who started working together in 2008 after long single dj careers. releases soon followed for big labels such as josh wink s ovum, hot creations sub-label hot waves and culprit la as well as licenses on several defected compilations. nathan barato worked his way onto the world stage with releases on the likes of cajual, saved and hot creations. 2016 also saw him as resident for jamie jones paradise at dc10 in ibiza. here he delivers a punchy remix to dominate the dancefloor, centered around a hefty bassline, tight drum patterns and slick vocal cuts.

the israeli producer yotam avni, though not one of the main players in the stroboscopic artefacts story to date, nevertheless shows that he is definitely here for a reason: having contributed with an entry in the monad series back in july, he returns with a new set of tracks that fit perfectly into the labels overall aesthetic of evolving hyper-reality, while also being a strong personal statement.

following 2014 s untitled 12 inch on the rush hour store jams imprint, amsterdam based faster action (this time a solo outing by interstellar funk) now surfaces on l.i.e.s. with a fresh two track 12 inch. stated as dj tools for the djs this is what we get here, with the a-side sounding like an late 80s industrial strength 909 driven ebm cut, while the b-side goes strong with a metallic beat track perfect for the adventerous working dj. 100 percent club approved! act quick!

mysterious producer kian t is a crazy guy living in a lonely house on a top of a hill somewhere in italy. surrounded by a collection of rare old synths and vintage samplers, a little dog and the best red wine of italy. kian is making beats all day long. that’s his life. he started his career on toy tonics last year and now is back with an own ep - full of that fucked up, jazz influenced cut & paste house sound that is taking over the house world since last year. similar to his friends rhode & brown, fouk, nachtbraker or the guys around oye records in berlin he loves to create this special way of sampling old jazz records and using rare vintage synthesizers instead of digital computer sounds. just listen to a normal deep house records of the last years and compare it with the sound of the kian. using these old synths makes a big difference. you can hear it on every of his tunes: there is no cheap sound here everything is fat and has a very warm, personal, always easy to recognize sound-aesthetic: courtesy of the four synthesizers he uses: the korg polysix, the sequential prophet600, a roland juno 60, and the legendary oberheim matrix 6. and courtesy of the way he mixes his tracks: not in the laptop - but the old way: on a fat old mixing desk. thats why he has that massive sound.

to wrap up 2016, true romance unleashes one more disco stunner. this time the fabulous three tracks 12 comes from the classically trained yet funky to the bone: phil gerus. the russian producer has been a rising force of the modern disco movement with releases on futureboogie, sonar kollektiv, thugboat edits to name a few. the make time ep, his first offering on true romance, confirms gerus is here to stay. the a side, she is wearing her black boots again, is meant to played very loud and very late in a dark smoke-filled room. its a raw thumper with a thick post-disco bass line, robotic italo synth, dreamy chopped up vocals all layered with catchy mysterious chords. the flipside starts with the irresistible make time, a groovy number with loopy funk guitars, soulful vocals and infectious keys that will stick to you like glue. for the grande finale, gerus serves us detective from kamakura: a gritty electronic funk track with banging percussions and delirious moans that will keep you awake until the break of dawn.

bobby analog launches his body fusion imprint with an ep of deep and disco infused house jams. three tracks that slip and slide across the dance floor with ease. chopped vocals, live drums, infectious grooves and crisp hats are the order of the day here.

landing straight after 415-pr10, public releases first in a loose series of san francisco-centric compilations, this three-track 12inch is a further exploration of the bay areas sounds and aesthetics, though here its explored via remixes produced by friends from abroad. the a-side is a complete overhaul, reimagining, and extension of anonstops seaside by thee loving hand, tim goldsworthys solo moniker of choice these days. the ex-dfa records co-founder and former member of unkle took the tunes balearic foundation and used it as a bed for what one might mistake as a lost arthur russell cut from the world of echo era. joel wells lent his airy, light, sweet vocals to the track, while darren morris added synth work to bolster tim’s usual production genius. it’s carefree and emotive, the aural equivalent of a big, toothy smile. the flip features a mix thats a whole helluva lot more intense and uptempo, though no less positive than its original. chidas remix of domination is squarer and housier than beziers piece, which was glitzy classic disco dunked in italo, but enough of it remains to be unmistakably a spinoff. fiery and propulsive in the way a gulfstream jet is, its a ball of thunder that will electrify any set, any dance floor.

hauschka is a composer, songwriter and experimental musician who has brought an exciting new perspective to the prepared piano. the prepared piano – a technique for getting new sounds from the acoustic keyboard by resting pieces of paper or drumsticks on the strings of the instrument - has been used for centuries, but hauschka was unaware of the tradition when he began exploring ways to get new sounds out of his bechstein grand upright.

these songs were made over the past 2 and a half years by uchi: luna (january 2016), was named after a talking cat. it s kind of a sad story. you will find some synth sounds, three different kick drums, and a couple hi-hats. it s kind of moody. you can take it as it is, or not. pride is poison (july 2014) ironically, it s titled after experiencing dosages of unhealthy relationships, though it might be the one people like the most. it s sad-ish, noisy, bouncie, and bassie? that about sums it up. inc (february 2016) is titled after the international noise conference, where it was recorded. actually it s a 3 part spliced zoom room recording of a 25min long improvisation, made in a punk bar. the argument here holds, is it really worth it to make perfect music? where is the concept of -live- in techno anyways? it doesn t matter. it s just a semi-distorted recording of a moment that meant nothing to almost no one, and yet it lives.
